Poetry has a way of connecting us to the external and internal world. In poetry it is easier to feel a season and truly feel a piece due to this. Poetry has a subtle way of making the readers immersed into the world of the poem. With the air getting colder and leaves starting to change, it feels like fall is already fast approaching. Here are some poets and collections to connect you with the season.

Summer Snow by Robert Hass

This collection was written a couple years after Hass won the Pulitzer Prize and deals with the feelings and atmosphere of fall. These poems feel dark and moody, discussing heavy topics still found in our world today. However, throughout the heavy poems there are lighter nature filled pieces with underlying themes. This collection is perfect for readers who want the melancholy feeling that comes with fall.

Edgar Allan Poe Complete Tales and Poems by Edgar Allen Poe

The season of fall and spookiness goes hand in hand. You can’t feel fall until you’ve felt at least just a bit scared. There is no better poet to suggest than Poe himself. In his pieces Poe masterfully immerses you into the unknown with fears you weren’t aware you had prior to reading. His writing style helps you feel his dark and gloomy emotions, you can’t help, but associate his work with the colder weather and darker atmosphere. With pieces known world wide Poe is your best bet in feeling spooked with poetry this season.

Autumn Poetry: A Collection for the Season by Jan Darrow

Much like the title says this collection is perfect for cozy reading. Written specifically with fall in mind Darrow writes soft pieces with supernatural undertones. She takes the usually feared fall features such as ghost and turns them into something soft, something that is beyond just fear. If you’re looking for a cozy, but in the Halloween/fall spirit this collection is exactly what you need.

A Collection of Nightmares by Christina Sng

This award winning poet takes us on a horrifying journey through sleepless insomnia, where nightmares really come true. This modern horror collection dives straight into confessions and truths. It tackles what is really scary, the secrets we hide within ourselves. If you’re looking for dark and confessional pieces this collection is exactly what you want to read. Quick and short pieces with loads of emotional unpacking be sure to truly sit down with this collection.

These collections are only touching the surface of fall poetry, with horror, nature, and gloom. If you find yourself drawn to horror more then I advise taking a look at some H.P. Lovecraft and if you’re more drawn to nature take a look at Robert Frost. Poetry has a way of showing you the depths within yourself and I highly recommend trying to find a collection or poet that sticks with you, makes you think about the world you are experiencing and the millions of others in it.
