Mark your calendars for March 1 because I have a new book for you to warm up to during these icy months! Size, Skill, Strength, and Speed! by Helen Marketti is an reminiscent novel highlighting the 1986 -1987 Hockey team and season. This book captures the camaraderie and dedication of hockey players, coaches, and fans alike. I had the joy of interviewing the author Helen Marketti, a Bowling Green State University Graduate (1988), a published author, and BG hockey enthusiast. During this interview I was able to gain some insight into her inspirations for writing her book and her time as a student at BGSU that I am excited to share with you.

What was your inspiration for writing Size, Skill, Strength, and Speed!?

She explained that while reminiscing on her time at BGSU with her friends their best memories always came back to their time with BG hockey. One exemplary hallmark of the hockey culture of this time is best stated by team doctor Dr. Tom Wojciechowski. Markett explains in her book Dr. Wojciechowski (or Doc Wogo) remarked the hockey student section in 1986 – 1987 was “rabid.” She also explained how her and friends had wondered where many of the BG hockey players of the 86-87 season had gone after their time at BGSU. After this conversation, her friends encouraged her to write this book to capture their best memories and highlight the players, coaches and staff behind this amazing season. 

What is your favorite memory from your time with BGSU hockey or BGSU in general?

One memory Marketti said “she could never forget” was Central Collegiate Hockey Association finals against University of Michigan on February 21, 1987. BGSU Hockey won the game to secure the league title. “I had bruises on my hand from clapping so hard and laryngitis from screaming,” Marketti said.  She said it was unforgettable when team captains Iain Duncan and Todd Flichel skated around the rink in celebration with the CCHA banner before handing off the banner to the rest of the team.  

What advice would she give future and current Bowling Green State University students?

She encouraged any student to attend and support Falcon hockey and to explore and experiment during their time at BG specifically in their pursuit of a major.
