This book was published in 2016 with its genre being Young Adult, Dystopian, and Apocalyptic. This story is about Rowan, who is a second-born child living in a city where her entire existence is illegal. She longs for the day when she can leave her family’s house and live without fear.
She gets her chance. We see Rowan leaving the safety of her home for the first time to explore the city she has never known and more. It is the first book in a trilogy set in a dystopian City living out the aftermath of a man-made climate change extinction. Because the City they live in is inherently small, the population is limited to one child per family. However, Rowan is a second-born child who her family has hidden for years.
She gets an offer to live with a new family who will hack her into the system to make it seem like she’s always been a firstborn child. On the way, she meets other people for the first time. Some even become her friends who understand her mission and help her safely get there. Unfortunately, operations against a dystopian technologically advanced city never go according to plan
Readers be advised that one of the genres of this book, Young Adult, should not be taken lightly. It is written with a much younger audience in mind with it being about 18 and younger. It is an interesting read but it might not hook you into the story as much as another book might.
