It’s that time of year again where the weather is starting to cool down and the Halloween decorations are being put out. For me once it hits end of September my TBR becomes nothing, but horror and thriller novels. As a big mood reader the seasons and holidays determine what I want to read next. So, cozy up and wind down for these four horrors you need to read this October.
A Certain Hunger – Chelsea G. Summers
The debut novel that captured the horror genre and puts you in the story of Dorothy Daniels a convicted woman serial killer. The book follows passages from past to present where Dorothy is writing in prison. Dorothy has an obsession with food andwrites as a food critic. All is well until she starts to combined her love for food with her rage against men. Eventually leading into a cannibalistic mindset. This book is perfect for people who loved Bunny by Mona Awad as it follows a very similar ideology on women and feminism.
None of This is True – Lisa Jewell
If you’re a fan of true crime podcast this novel may peak your interest. The book follows Alix Summers who runs a true crime podcast. She is celebrating her forty-fifth birthday at a pub when she meets Josie who happens to be her birthday twin. Soon Josie mentions becoming a subject for Alix’s podcast, the more Alix finds out about Josie the more unsettling it gets, but she can’t seem to let her self stop. Once Alix starts to realize the secrets Josie is hiding, suddenly Josie disappears. Leaving behind a terrible legacy and throwing Alix and her family’s lives in danger.
Gallows Hill – Darcy Coates
Like most of us if you binged The Haunting of Hill House or The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix you’ll notice similar themes in this book. After a decade Magot Hull is back in her childhood home and this time it doesn’t want her to leave. With secrets, lies and bloody truths buried beneath the crumbling estate you’ll find yourself face to face with the horrors Margot has tried so desperately to forget. A great pick for those who want a ghost story that makes you want to keep turning the page.
Her Body and Other Parties – Carmen Marie Machado
This collection of short horror stories focuses on the thin line between psychological realism, science fiction, comedy and fantasy while still terrifying readers. These stories show the horror in women’s lives and the violence on their bodies; all while staying in a world not quite our own. If you like reading novels close to reality, but not quite and stories that take real life horror and twist it into something more in the fantasy realm this collection is for you.
