Taylor Jenkins Reid’s hit novel Daisy Jones & The Six is the story of a fictional 1970s rock band and their rapid rise to stardom. For fans of bands like Fleetwood Mac, this book encapsulates the drama that many bands at the time faced with their newfound fame: relationship issues, cheating scandals, drug addiction, the list goes on. But the story told in this book is so much more than just a fictionalized Fleetwood Mac. These characters faced their own problems and had their own unique issues that are just as interesting to read about as the real dramas.
Daisy Jones is the epitome of the seventies rock star. She’s beautiful and captivates audiences with her looks and her voice. But she is also a chronic drug user and this interferes with her work. Billy Dunne—the lead singer of The Six—is just as charming to audiences as Daisy. Though he goes through his own wild phase, he is able to go to rehab and better himself, and be there for his wife and children. When the two are told they will be working together, there is an immediate clash; Billy feels he is above Daisy because of her partying lifestyle, while Daisy feels her contributions are not being taken seriously because she is just supposed to be the voice. But as the book progresses, the two form a close connection to each other, so close that it causes new problems to arise. And these problems form new cracks in their relationship that ultimately cause the band to shatter and never perform together again.
While this may sound like an exciting read, it should be said that there is one part of the novel that may keep readers from fully enjoying it: the book’s format. The book is completely told as an interview with each member of the band being able to share their perspective on what happened all those years ago. Some may be fine with this format, but for others, it may make it more difficult to envision the events of the novel.
For those that don’t like the idea of an interview-style novel but are still intrigued by the premise, there is a solution. Amazon Prime is releasing a 10-episode mini-series based on the novel. The first episode will premiere Friday, March 3. Fans of the novel will also enjoy the show, as well as the bonus content that has been created alongside it. In the novel Daisy Jones & The Six only released one album together titled Aurora. Along with the show, there will also be a version of Aurora available for streaming or for purchase. While the release does not fully follow the fictional Aurora, it is still able to capture the magic that Daisy Jones & The Six were able to create together. Aurora will also be available on Friday, March 3. Two songs from the album—“Look at Us Now (Honeycomb)” and “Regret Me”—have already been released.
The mini-series and album releases are such a unique way of adapting a book into other forms of media. When many readers finished the novel, they were left wishing that Daisy Jones & The Six was a real band so that they could go and listen to Aurora and fully experience the magic of the band. With these adaptions, readers will finally have this opportunity. And Daisy Jones & The Six will be appreciated in their full glory.
