I hope you were able to read books from some of the spooky authors mentioned in my last post! If not, here are four last minute reads perfect for the end of the spooky season. Some of these reads are more thrillers if you are not a huge fan of horror but are still looking for something a little spooky. Each book suggestion has a TV show or movie adaptation made off of it. By reading one of these books, you will also have the perfect TV show or movie to watch this Halloween. Here are the four spooky reads:
“It” by Stephen King
If killer clowns do not scare you, read this book and see if your mind changes! George made a boat with his older brother Bill and takes it outside to play with it. The boat falls down a sewer, which is where the killer clown Pennywise is. While George attempts to retrieve the boat, he is killed by Pennywise. Bill and six other children have an encounter with Pennywise not as a clown but in some form. The children are determined to uncover the truth behind the evil that is haunting their hometown of Derry. They are unsuccessful but promise each other that they would return if they evil returned. After 27 years, the group comes together after the evil returns to destroy it once and for all. King does a beautiful job of alternating between timelines and keeping the adrenaline high.
“It” was made into two movies: “It,” which was released in 2017, and “It: Chapter Two,” which was released in 2019. Both can be streamed on Netflix. I watched the the first movie “It,” and it is definitely a movie that will keep you up at night for the next few days.
“Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn
This thriller will have you in shock until the very end. The story takes place in North Carthage, Missouri, where it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Amy disappears, however, with no explanation to anyone. Amy’s friends are convinced that Amy was afraid of Nick and think Nick did something to her. The police and town suspect Nick murdered Amy. He claims that he did not, but evidence is found that does not help his case. Gillian does a beautiful job of keeping the reader intrigued by alternating the chapters between Nick’s and Amy’s perspective. Did Nick kill Amy? Is Amy really dead? Who is innocent? Are either of them innocent? You will not be disappointed in the answers if you read this book!
“Gone Girl” was made into a movie in 2014. It can be streamed on Disney+. I have watched this movie, and I was left in complete shock multiple times throughout the movie. The ending took me for a complete surprise. If you are into thrillers and mysteries, this novel or film will not disappoint.
“Bird Box” by Josh Malerman
This horror novel centers around an unknown being that drives anyone who looks at it to deadly violence. It is unknown where this being came from and what exactly this being is. It has been five years since this being has been terrorizing the people of the story, so only a few people here and there remain. Malorie is still alive with her two four-year-old son and daughter. She sets them out on a journey to safe place. This journey requires traveling down river for 20 miles and being blindfolded so as not to see the being and with that be driven to deadly violence. This book alternates from the past to the present. Josh Malerman cleverly wrote this book to keep you on your toes. And the question remains throughout the novel: what is this being? Read to find out!
“Bird Box” was made into a movie in 2018. It can be streamed on Netflix.
“You” by Caroline Kepnes
This triller will leave you disturbed yet dying to know what happens next. Guinevere Beck is an aspiring writer who lives in New York City. She goes into a book store that Joe Goldberg works at. Joe googles her after seeing her name on her credit card. He stalks Beck and starts to become obsessive over her. Joe takes it into his own hands to orchestrate “accidents” that make sure Beck has no one else to go to but him. Joe eventually becomes Beck’s girlfriend, but how long does that last? What did Joe do to get Beck? Does Beck find out? Can Beck escape Joe herself? You will not be bored reading this novel.
“You” is the first book of the four book series. It was made into a TV series on Netflix, and the first season was released in 2018. There will be a fourth season coming out next year in February. I have watched the first two seasons. It is a very intense and graphic show that definitely left me disturbed. However, it did a great job of building suspense and making you feel a little creeped out.
It’s crazy to think that October is already coming to an end. If you are looking for something last minute to get in the “spooky” mood, I hope these novels, movies and tv shows do it! They are definitely ones to watch and read with someone else and a comfort item close by.
Enjoy and Happy Halloween!
