Fall break is the perfect time to pick up that book you’ve been wanting to read but have not had the time for. If you want to read this fall break but don’t know where to start, below are four great suggestions. All four books either have or will have a tv show or movie adaptation. Pick one of these books, and you won’t just be able to imagine the story, but see the story play out as well.

“Exciting Times” By Naoise Dolan

This 2020 novel follows the life of 22-year-old Ava. Ava moves from her hometown of Dublin, Ireland to Hong Kong. There she teaches English to children. She struggles to find happiness in this new place until she meets Julian. Julian is a British banker who spoils her with all she needs. Ava moves into Julian’s apartment and they soon engage in a sexual relationship. Ava is stuck being all alone again when Julian has to go back to London for his job. Edith comes along, a lawyer from Hong Kong, and takes Ava to the theater. She leaves Ava flowers and Ava finds herself wanting to be with her. While figuring this out, Julian tells Ava that he is coming back to Hong Kong. Ava is now trapped with deciding whether to go back to her relationship with Julian or whether to pursue something with Edith. Amazon prime is currently working on a tv series adaptation of this novel, so you’ll have plenty of time to read before you watch.

“Three Women” By Lisa Taddeo

Almost a decade of reporting has gone into creating this story. This 2019 novel dives into the true story of three American women’s sex lives. Lina lives in the suburbs of Indiana, where she is the mother of two children and works as a housewife. After a decade of marriage, she feels that all affection and fervor has left their relationship. She suffers from panic attacks and finds this affection she’s missing from her husband through an old friend from social media. This eventually turns into an affair that becomes encompassing. The second woman is 17-year-old Maggie from North Dakota. She enters into a secret sexual relationship with her married English teacher. The third and final woman is a successful restaurant owner from the Northeast. Sloane is happy in her marriage, but her husband enjoys watching her have sex with other men and women. SHOWTIME is premiering a tv series adaptation of this novel this fall.

“Deep Water” By Patricia Highsmith

This novel is more of a classic as it was published in 1957. It takes place in the small town of Little Wesley, where the married couple Vic and Melinda Van Allen live. Vic and Melinda have fallen out of love with each other but agree to stay together to avoid the mess that comes with a divorce. Part of this agreement, however, is that Melinda is allowed to be with as many lovers as she wants, as long as she does not leave her family. Vic becomes jealous of Melinda’s lovers and jokingly takes credit for the killing of one of Melinda’s former lovers in order to drive the current one away. What started as a joke, however, turns into a reality as Vic begins murdering Melinda’s lovers in order to win his wife back. There was a movie adaptation of this novel that was released earlier this year in March. The movie can be streamed on HULU.

“My Policeman” By Bethan Roberts

This 2012 novel is told through two different perspectives. Marion is a teacher who is in love with her best friend’s older brother Tom. Tom served in the National Service but came home to take on a career as a policeman. Marion is committed to winning him over and eventually marries him. Throughout this, however, she is unaware that there is another lover in Tom’s life. Patrick is a keeper of a museum who is also in love with Tom. While Tom likes Patrick, he think’s Marion is the safer option in the society that they live in. Both Marion and Patrick give their perspectives of the story as both are forced to “share” Tom until a final decision is made. A movie adaptation of this novel will be available on Amazon Prime Video this November 4.

Each of these four books are great reads that will keep you turning the page and not wanting to set the book down. They also all have a tv show or movie adaptation that will allow you to see the story you imagined come to life.

Happy Reading and have a great fall break!
