Around the world, millions of people are sitting in their homes, some all alone, practicing social distancing. Boredom comes easily when part of your daily routine is staring at your ceiling.
Here are four pandemic-related books to help fill your quarantine routine.
Blindness by Jose Saramango
A plague of blindness begins to spread. This novel begins with one man suddenly going blind during rush hour, then chaos ensues. In an interview with Jose Saramango, the author said the novel shows “how fragile our civilization is, and how easily it can collapse.”
The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton
This 1969 techno-thriller novel documents the efforts of a fictional team of scientists investigating an outbreak of a deadly extraterrestrial microorganism in New Mexico. The otherworldly threat was brought back to earth on a secret government satellite, leaving every human vulnerable to its deadly effects.
The Hot Zone by Richard Preston
Unlike the above selections, “The Hot Zone” is based on true stories. The 1994 best-seller nonfiction thriller explains the origins and outbreaks involving viral hemorrhagic fevers, a diverse group of animal/human illnesses stemming from viral infection. This includes the Ebola viruses and Marburg viruses. The book is based on the author’s 1992 article, “Crisis in the Hot Zone.”
I am Legend by Richard Matheson
This novel became a 2007 film that’s now considered a classic. The 1954 post-apocalyptic horror novel follows a man alone in a world full of monsters. At night, Robert Neville barricades himself inside his house, listening to vampire hordes meander around outside.
