With the new semester upon us it is important to prioritize your mental health. Dr. Carolyn Tompsett, Associate Professor of Psychology at BGSU and licensed therapist recommends that students and faculty purchase “Feeling Good” by David Burns. “Feeling Good” is a self-help guide to cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Dr. Tompsett recommends this book because it is a scientifically based self-help book and the target audience is those who are struggling with depression. Dr. Tompsett advises people to be selective when choosing a self-help book because many of them are based on the author’s own experience and told through anecdotes which is limiting because mental health is not one size fits all. Before selecting a book on mental health, Dr. Tompsett advises readers to look for books that are recommended by other psychologists, to choose science-based books, and ask current therapists what’s on their bookshelf. Dr. Tompsett recommends purchasing this book because it will be a lifelong resource to help you in the dark times when you are struggling to find the light.
